The Trinidad and Tobago Steelpan and Jazz Festival, is set to kick off in fine style this weekend.
Organizers of the event, the Queens Royal College (QRC) Foundation, have said the festival is "a global musical tour through the expressions of full orchestras, to smaller steel ensembles and avant-garde crossover artistes."
The main event tonight is a free community concert at the St. James Amphitheatre featuring Shurwayne Winchester and Traffik, Jeremy Ledbetter and Canefire, 3-Canal, Pantasy.
Another highlight is "The Return of the Hat - A Tribute to Lord Kitchener," a concert featuring the works of the legendary Grand Master scheduled for tomorrow night at Queen's Hall.
This is being hosted by the Foundation in collaboration with the New York-based Trinidad and Tobago Folk Art Institute. Featured performers are Relator, Aldwin Albino, Raf Robertson and friends, the Caribbean Connection and the Grand Festival Orchestra - Desperadoes Steel Orchestra and the TT Police Service Band.
On Sunday "Voices and Steel" featuring the Bishop's Anstey High School Choir, the Berklee College of Music Sextet, the Lydian Singers and Exodus Steel Orchestra takes place at Queen's Hall, St Ann's .Ongoing since Monday is the Pan and Jazz Photo Exhibition at the National Museum, Port-of-Spain
The Pan Jazz Festival evolved from a one-night concert staged by the QRC Foundation in 1996 in honour of the steel pan. The concert was renamed "Pan Royale" in 2001 and in 2003 it increased to a four night schedule. Re-christened as the Trinidad and Tobago Steel Pan Festival and Jazz Festival Pan Royale 2004 the programme expanded to a ten-day affair with performances around the country.
