Port of Spain, Trinidad: Nov 6, 2007
Soca's "Golden Boy" Machel Montano emerged victorious at last Thursday at the Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago's (COTT) Music Awards which were held at Queen's Hall, St. Ann's.
Montano who opened the show with his 2007 Carnival hit "Higher than High" walked away with the three top awards "Soca of the Year", "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year."
The theme for this year's show was "Ignite the Music" and that is exactly what happened Queen's Hall was on fire with not only a well put together production but some T&T's the best and brightest musicians both young and old.
Last year's big winner Shurwyane Winchester gave a stirring rendition of one of his new tracks called "No More". Patrice Roberts, Ayana Gordon, Kees, Ziggy Ranking as well Rizon also represented well.
However, it was Lord Nelson who stole the show from his younger counterparts; as he wowed everyone with not only his nimble dance moves during his rendition of "La La" but also with his hot pink cat suit. He received the "Pioneer of the Year" award.
Hosts for the evening's show Jason "JW" Williams and Isaac "Bionic Blaze" Haynes had the audience in stitches with their antics from start to finish. Throughout the evening's production they demonstrated the different personas that surface during the Carnival; from the "stush" all inclusive patrons to the "guntas" who frequent fetes like Wasa and Fire.
Special tribute was also paid to composer/ percussionist Ralph Mac Donald as well as Billy Ocean who made a surprise appearance during the closing set by Destra Garcia, Sanell Dempster and Nadia Batson. The ladies and the icon sang his mega hit "Caribbean Queen".
