Reggae singer Nadine Sutherland was at her best two weeks ago when she performed at the St Lucia Jazz Festival for the first time in her career. Taking the stage on day one of the festival, Sutherland and her Strong House backing band gave an electrifying one-hour set of classics. Digging deep into her catalogue she performed a host of singles including Action, Baby Face, Wicked Fi Please and Big Tings, which found a responsive chord with the capacity audience. Nadine who released her compilation album Call My Name last April was duly rewarded for her contributions to reggae music at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards International Awards a few months ago were she got the Order of Merit. The 10-day jazz festival which celebrated its 17th anniversary this year featured a stellar line up of international artistes including the voices of Jonathan Butler, Dianne Reeves, Dionne Warwick, Ledisi and Angie Stone along with the musical talents of instrumental performers such as the Juilliard Quartet, featuring Ron Blake, Eddie Henderson, Carl Allen and Ben Wolfe while the Haitian hip hop superstar Wyclef Jean cemented the diversity. Since its establishment in 1992, St Lucia Jazz has grown in magnitude and stature to become one of the pre-eminent jazz festivals in the world. World-class artistes including r&b legends Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Carlos Santana, Patti Labelle and jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Jordan, Roy Hargrove and George Benson have all played before an audience of St Lucian locals and tourists.
